Staff Update

  TripGreetings All,
I returned this weekend from my Iditarod Journey - Thank you for your kind words of support as I set out. Some of you have asked for more information and so...
I have found it helpful to always challenge myself, and felt the need to get perspective on our work with RISC and getting the organization to the next level of sustainability. This has been a way to look at things differently. The trip was exhilarating and exhausting, allowing moments of introspection, and a good dose of horror. Laura and Butterball, Zeus and I (our aptly named wolf/huskies) set out Feb 23 from the Skwentna Roadhouse on the Iditarod Trail pulling 65 pound sleds, our dog pulling each of us, on skiis. We carried everything we needed; stoves to melt snow, tent, bags, compass, equipment and food for 2 weeks for us and the dogs. We arrived in the village of McGrath, 250 miles and 14 days later. The dogs are in good shape and were ready to continue on, they really took care of us on the trail. We chose this method because we wanted to take our time and see the land.

trip2The Iditarod Trail was first scouted in 1908 which led thousands of gold-seekers to hike or mush the trail which resulted in Alaska's population increase and elevation to territorial status. The trail crosses lakes, travels up rivers, over glacier (thus the horror), down gorges and through the Alaska Range, continuing over a thousand miles across Alaska. It is marked with stakes and wooden tripods and maintained by snow-machine. When the wind blows, the trail disappears...

Although we snow camped along the way, the Discovery Channel actually found us 120 miles out and wondered why we didn't have more dogs, we began to wonder also. The Iditarod Race began a week after we set out and within 2 days all mushers (with 14+ dogs) had sped past us. Rick Holt passed our camp at 11 pm one night in the Buffalo Chutes and we called out to each other as the Buffalo watched.

A glorious big black wolf watched me break camp one morning across an icy azure lake, a small caribou herd fled in front of the dogs another day, and I learned that I could ski up mountains with a dog. I also learned that I could fall down everyday on ice, down mountains, and chutes and still somehow get up because I wanted to see what was next. So, I may not be smart, but curious I am. Still digesting the trip, recovering from bumps and bruises, but feeling strong, satisfied and inspired.
A few pics here...

I hope your journeys are safe and illuminating as well.

Wendy
